Breakout SessionThe objective of this work was to evaluate the behavior of a locomotive within an existing tunnel.
For the use of the topographic survey was used the Total Station (MultiStation). The use of the scanner function of the MS060, allowed the rapid and very high precision of the existing infrastructure in operation in Brazil.
The challenge of this research was to capture the reality inside the tunnel with details and precision that is not reached with conventional topography, to test the displacement of a new type of locomotive inside the tunnel. 3DReShaper software was used to treat scanner data, surface generation, graphic detail production, and animation. The use of 3DReShaper allowed to evaluate the behavior of the locomotive section section of the tunnel in the face of repairs that were made with a thick layer of concrete designed to combat collapsing.

Breakout SessionThe Katerloch is one of Austria's biggest stalactite caves. It consists of several domes with different sizes and different density of stalactites. Due to poor light conditions, many obstructions of the line of sight, narrow corridors, huge domes and an underground lake, the selection of the right instrumentation, an appropriate measurement configuration and an optimal processing strategy are crucial to obtain meaningful results. In this talk we present our approach which uses a combination of a classical laser scanner (Leica P40), a small scale scanner (Leica BLK360) and a scanning total station (MS60). The major part of the cave was captured from more than 30 setup points with the P40 to obtain high precise point clouds even for long distances. This dataset was completed with measurements of the BLK360. It's low weight and high mobility provided measurements in close areas with many stalactites and narrow corridors. Finally, the measurements of the MS60 supported the registration of the dataset. Furthermore, it was also possible to scan the ground surface of the shallow lake with the MS60 instrument. After coregistration of all point clouds in Cyclone the modelling was performed with 3D Reshaper. The resulting 3D model of the Katerloch gives a better understanding of the dimensions and the history of the cave to scientists and cave explorers. The model can also be used to generate physical models of the main attractions with a 3D printer to create virtual tours with VR technology.

Breakout SessionMonitoring during construction of the Rotterdamsebaan The Rotterdamsebaan is being constructed in The Hague, the third largest city in the Netherlands. The Rotterdamsebaan is a new road entrance from the highways to the city center of The Hague. Part of this new road is in a tunnel that runs from the Vlietzone to the Binckhorst. In 2018, 2 tunnel tubes were drilled with a tunnel boring machine (TBM) from 1640 meter each. The Hague city council contracted Fugro to do the monitoring. Fugro would monitor the impact of the project on the infrastructure and buildings along the tunneling corridor. Besides the monitoring itself, the contract also includes stakeholder management and building a web-portal for the client with specific requirements for monitoring the TBM. During and up to 3 months after drilling the Victory Boogie Woogie tunnel, (the movements of) buildings and roads immediately above and next to the drilling route were carefully monitored. This was done with 40 robotic total stations which were all connected via a geometric network. This equipment measured the position of thousands of measurement points every 30 minutes. In total there were about 2,500 measurement point on buildings and 4,000 points on ground surface. The measurements were executed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as long as drilling takes place and presented to the client via the web-portal. The monitoring started 3 months prior to the drilling of the tunnel and continued until 3 months after.

Breakout SessionLocating and mapping underground utility networks for design purposes is a challenging task. Usually, the bigger the city, the more complex this task becomes. In some circumstances, other challenges, such as the amount of utilities and the restrictions placed on us for people and traffic, can be faced when mapping one of the busiest streets on the planet: Las Vegas Strip. Here we will show the progression following the SUE process, from records data obtained from The City of Las Vegas records creating a quality level D (QLD) drawing. Then applying standard QLB mapping technologies, including IDS GeoRadar single channel GPR systems, Cardno was able to improve the accuracy of those original maps. Most of SUE companies would stop here, however, Cardno decided they could do even better by using in this project the most advanced GPR solutions, i.e. IDS GeoRadar STREAM technology. After scanning the underground of Las Vegas Strip with the STREAM, the final maps created improved the accuracy of these drawings substantially.

Breakout SessionAlthough budgets are tight, time demands are even tighter. Now more than ever, it is important to know as quickly as possible how a drillhole is influencing our resource. Faster turnarounds are needed to determine geological and metallurgical properties so they can be included in a model that can be used for mine planning on shorter and shorter timeframes. This situation has produced a paradigm change on where we collect drilling data and how we view its value. Previously unexplored workflow using geoscientific imagery are now considered essential because they can speed up our efforts to define geological and physical properties without the overhead of accessing the material physically. Workflows based on imagery are becoming a key component of how we do our jobs. Photographs have always been taken of diamond core and sample cuttings. However, these images to date have only been captured as insurance for the future and supporting validation and verification tasks. They are rarely considered valuable sources of immediate data. This presentation will discuss why better images must be taken while drilling, why we should view them as a valuable source of data and how they can be used to support a continuous modelling process.

Breakout SessionMost large enterprises and government entities comprise multiple siloed systems that do not communicate with one another because their location data, schemas, and data values are not compatible. Moreover, traditional data integration methods are labor intensive, risky, and do not scale. Semantic rules can be defined using knowledge graphs to build intelligent integrated solutions for different industry verticals. These rules, when implemented in a spatial ontology, can help automate data integration at scale across disparate systems and perform human-like reasoning on spatial data beyond what traditional spatial databases support. This talk will demonstrate how a semantic spatial metamodel can be used to build knowledge graphs with open source technologies and how they can be integrated into LuciadRIA.

Breakout SessionWhile every project poses unique challenges, common steps of educating the client, determining the appropriate capture methods and scoping both field work and deliverables can help to alleviate hurdles and make projects run smoothly. This presentation presents a pilot project that examines the technical and cultural challenges towards long-term recording and digital preservation of Maori taonga (treasures) and the role that mapping professionals play in bridging the gap between traditional values and the need to establish a national archive. Maori meeting houses are complex spaces replete with intricate wooden carvings and woven panels throughout. Digital recording of such structures necessitates capturing different external and internal elements at different resolutions utilising different sensors with outputs largely dependent on both client and end-user requirements. Consideration of intellectual ownership and understanding the importance, value and indigenous protocols around the use of the data is critical. We discuss the efficacy of both Leica BLK 360 and RTC 360, along with the integration of different camera sensors, cognisant of the required outputs, available survey time and cost trade-offs. It is not simply about the technical mapping of cultural features, but understanding the importance, relevance and heritage value they represent to specific groups.

Breakout SessionWhat You Need to Know to Prepare for the 2022 National Spatial Reference System (NSRS) Modernization In 2022, the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) will launch a number of improvements to the National Spatial Reference System. Among these will be the replacement of the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83) and the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88) with a new geometric reference frame and geopotential datum. The new reference frames will rely primarily on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), such as the Global Positioning System (GPS), as well as on a gravimetric geoid model resulting from the NGS Gravity for the Redefinition of the American Vertical Datum (GRAV-D) Project. These new reference frames will be easier to access and maintain than NAD 83 and NAVD 88, which rely on physical survey marks that deteriorate over time. However, these changes mean your coordinates will also change. This presentation will outline the steps you need to take now to be prepared for the datum transformations and help you understand how to effectively work within the new paradigm of time-dependent geodetic control.

Breakout SessionDouble Homicide Shooting - 3D Scan to Plan Diagram in Map360, Including Trajectory Analysis: In June 2015 York Regional Police began an investigation into a Double Homicide at a small Café , just north of Toronto Ontario. A suspect wearing a balaclava entered the Café and shot 4 people, two of whom were pronounced deceased at the scene and two sustained life-threatening injuries but recovered.
As part of the forensic investigation, the scene was scanned using a Leica P20 Scanner. A number of scans were completed, including scans for the purpose of Trajectory Analysis / Shooting Reconstruction. A portion of the premise was measured with a Leica Disto as it was not practical or necessary to use the 3D Scanner.
The Point Cloud Data and the Disto/Evidence Recorder Data were imported into Map360 and 2D Plan Diagrams were completed. Other features of Map360 were utilized including Bullet Path Reconstruction and the Evidence Report.
This case will be discussed in detail including how the 3D Point Cloud Data was invaluable to disprove a Defense argument that the wrong person was charged. The Defense had used video surveillance to determine the height of the suspect, which according to their analysis was significantly shorter than the accused. Integrating 3D Laster Scanning into Shooting Incident Reconstruction: Officer-Involved shooting incidents are complex investigations, requiring the cooperation of investigators across multiple agencies. The investigations require acute attention to details, objectivity, specialized tools, and training. Traditional documentation techniques use reflective strings and lasers, and require a great deal of time spent on-scene. The resulting exhibits are dated and rudimentary. Documentation with a 3D scanner significantly reduces the time spent on scene, and turns out a much more versatile and visually appealing exhibit.

Breakout SessionGeotechnicians are frequently faced with decisions based upon a variety of data from different types of sensors. These decisions must be made in a very short period of time and must correlate the different data, from weather, to underground to surface sensors. The interpretation of these parameters may take time that is valuable to prevent major damages to machinery and injuries or fatalities to people. QSI for almost 20 years has learned and developed an integrated platform that helps professionals to make decisions in no time. These platforms take advantage of Hexagon's technology, such as TPS, Laser Scanner, GNSS, GeoMoS Software, IDS radars and other auxiliary technology. All these sensors, plus InSAR data and geotechnical sensors, generate massive amounts of data, that most of the time are not processed in real time, therefore integration and real-time processing is a must for on-time decisions. With this experience, QSI has implemented the Total Monitoring concept in several open pit mines in Peru.

Breakout SessionLeica Geosystems, industry leader in measurement technology, began a partnership with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation last year to capture, document, and deliver immersive 3D experiences featuring the iconic architect's properties. Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home and studio, is the first property that will be made available through an immersive online experience led by Leica Geosystems. The Arizona property attracts more than 110,000 tourists each year. Now, the world can explore it through an accurate and detailed 3D models of the physical site that will allow viewers to virtually experience it as if they were there. The technology that was used to capture Taliesin West includes the Leica BLK360, Multivista construction documentation services, and Matterport 3D Showcase. The BLK360 is the world's smallest, fastest and most simple to use 3D imaging laser scanner. It provides the Foundation with data in two ways. The first is the 360º spherical imagery that feeds the visual immersive experience. The second comes in the form of a point cloud, a dimensionally accurate laser reproduction of the property that can be used for the Foundation's preservation efforts. The point cloud can even be loaded in popular CAD and BIM software for highly accurate renovations and careful design changes should the need arise. This data provided desperately needed documentation for the National Historic Landmark. The partnership with Leica, Multivista, and the Foundation continues with plans to test and showcase new technologies at Wright designs, with the great architect's Wisconsin home, Taliesin, coming this summer.

Breakout SessionCrime scenes by their nature are tragic. Few, however, are more tragic than the scene of a school shooting. Thorough documentation of the scene is a vital element in any crime scene investigation. Aside from photographs, the crime scene diagram is one of the most essential means to view and understand what happened. On December 7, 2017 an adult male armed with a 9mm handgun entered Aztec High School in New Mexico, killed two students and forever altered the lives of the survivors before taking his own life. Critical to the investigation was the accurate documentation of the scene and the ability to analyze a range of factors pertaining to the incident including what may have contributed to the shooting and what might be done to prevent or mitigate future tragedies. Three Leica ScanStation C10's and a P30 were used to document the scene, and Leica Map360 was utilized to distill the massive amount of scan data to much more manageable portions. This presentation will walk the attendee through the challenges and lessons learned during the data capture and registration phases. We will also explore some features of Map360 which made the complex task of reducing that data to a series of diagrams as straightforward as possible.

Breakout SessionJacobs were engaged by their client to complete a survey of part of their infrastructure, the purpose of this survey was to facilitate the design of new overhead power lines and structures with in the proposed areas. The client specifically requested us to scan their area of interest as they see the value in capturing point cloud information for ongoing use in the planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance programs. The client stressed the importance of capturing images and a coloured point cloud as previous point cloud data sets had limited use without the applied colours. Jacobs Surveyors utilised the Leica P40 and the Leica RTC 360 scan stations to complete scanning works onsite. A Leica TS16 total station was used to coordinate scan targets throughout the fieldworks. A GS18T GNSS system was used to confirm local survey control coordinates. Over 5 Days of field works over 500 scans were captured over a 2.5km section of rail corridor and sidings. Scan data was post processed using Leica Cyclone and TPS control data was processed and reduce in Leica Infinity. Almost 1.5 Terabytes of raw data was captured for the project. Although we have extensive cyclone registration experience; importing, combining, registering and exporting P40 and RTC360 datasets throughout the process we were met with numerous challenges; including data storage, software bugs and hardware limitations. Valuable lessons were learnt for future projects.

Breakout SessionHaving heard a lot about the ROI in using Reality Capture technology, Robotic Total Stations, VDC or BIM, I am never satisfied with the matrix used to calculate actual ROI. This case study regarding the $12M Pantages Theater for Tacoma Arts Live renovation presents a workflow which utilized the Leica iCon50, BLK and P40 Point Cloud Scanner. The project is the full interior renovation of historic Pantages Theatre, originally built in 1918. All surface plaster work was restored and re-painted. All seating and sub framing removed and replaced. Original stain glass skylight seismic upgrades. Main Challenges: 1) Seismic upgrades to a very tight attic space with unknown structural as-builts. 2) Fast schedule requiring floor framing while most space is occupied by scaffolding. Main Solutions: 1) Attic Workflow: Using the Leica BLK 360, scan existing conditions and use the data to create an LOD 350-400 of temporary catwalk system along seismic cage in context with the point cloud data. Installation time was cut in half, and ROI data presented includes original estimates, carpenter man-hour projections and all VDC department cost hours/scanning fees/equipment rentals. 2) Floor Framing Work Flow: To accomplish layout with scaffolding for plaster restoration in place, main auditorium was scanned using the Leica P40, and within this context the Leica iCON 60 robotic total station was used to lay out floor framing, which was brought to 80% completion with scaffolding in place. ROI data includes original estimates, carpenter man-hour projections and all VDC department cost including hours/scanning fees/equipment rentals.

Breakout SessionLeveraging IFC models for construction layout and verification provides many benefits to both Contractors and Designers. However, design authoring software, export limitations and many other factors impede our ability to efficiently leverage these models in the field. This session will review what options and workflows are available to transport IFC models to the Leica iCON build platform for use on the Leica iCON iCR80 construction total station. The two focus areas will be exporting construction ready IFC models from both Autodesk Revit and Navisworks platforms. Each software has specific set up techniques and workflows for optimum efficiency.
When using Autodesk Revit, we will review the importance of using shared coordinates, setting up predefined views using visibility and graphic overrides, and modifying the IFC export settings to produce small, manageable IFC models for use in iCON Build.
When using Autodesk Navisworks Manage, we will review setting up Search/Selection sets, Appearance Profiles and exporting IFC files using a 3rd party plugin. One of the major benefits to this process is being able to export layout ready files from your coordinated construction model.
As with most technology, there is more than one way to perform almost any task. These two workflows provide any builder the ability to convert both design and construction models for use in the iCON Build for either construction layout or quality control/assurance.

Breakout Session Circular Quay is one of Australia's great historical and cultural areas, positioned between two Australian icons the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It is a key entry point to Sydney's northern CBD as well as being one of Sydney's major transport interchanges. The NSW Government had identified the need to upgrade the Circular Quay ferry wharves with the benefits being: - Improve customer and visitor experience - Create a modern, safe and easy to use transport interchange - Grow the local and tourist economy - Update ageing infrastructure with sophisticated and sustainable design solutions. Project Surveyors was part of the successful tender team which included Norman Disney Young (NDY) and Coffey. The project was intended to provide for the capture of spatial information surrounding the Circular Quay precinct in Sydney. The scope of the work included the local built environment, underground services, geotechnical and condition reports all to be within an ESRI compatible format. We were required to carry out a site survey capturing existing structures and physical features. The data was collected using Leica scanners and total stations. Underground services were located using sondes and ground penetrating radar. We prepared a detailed 3D Revit model which allowed for the input of links to external data associated with the site and individual elements within the site model. These models were then used as the basis of the Asset Information Model (AIM). Users could click on an element within the AIM and pop-up menus would appear containing all information relevant to that element. Previously on a project such as this, that information would've been buried deep in multi-thousand page reports. This case study will look at the challenges of capturing data in, around and under a major transport interchange, the integration of BIM and GIS data as well as looking to the future of BIM and GIS.
